Cutting edge intelligence support to conservation

Langland brings cutting edge technology and techniques to conservation.

We are a UK based not-for-profit working with partners to support protection of the most endangered species in the most challenging environments.

Data analytics

Our team has considerable experience in employing a wide range of data feeds and intelligence sources to counter the most pressing security threats. We work with partners at the forefront of technology development, and we are fortunate to have secured access to Palantir’s data operating system that provides Langland with a state-of-the-art central hub to fuse streams of data, automate collection and processing, and build analysis tools to deliver powerful insights to conservation projects.

Investigations & network analysis

We employ cutting-edge technology to provide the means to better understand the illegal wildlife trade routes and the criminal networks that support them. We work with partners to develop operations that technically track and monitor illicit goods. We employ data and network analysis tools in order to deepen our understanding of the trafficking networks and the individuals within them – with a view to providing actionable intelligence for national and international law-enforcement partners.

Capacity building

We conduct capability audits to assist the operational design of intelligence led anti-poaching projects. We conduct analyst and investigative training to build local intelligence capacity with an in-built transition plan that leaves an enduring capability behind to support the anti-poaching units with increasingly light-touch analytical support from Langland.

 Case Studies

  • Tactical/patrol Level

At tactical/patrol level we assist decision making by anti-poaching units and help to refine their planning to be more effective and more aware of threats to their security.  We provide the analytical support that enables focussed interventions (maximising effect where resources are limited at the right place and at the right time), with detailed information from a range of sources about the wildlife, the environment, and the threats that affect patrolling in those areas.

  • Operational/park level

At operational/park level we support and inform decision making and provide a holistic understanding of relationships between wildlife, terrain, human presence and criminality. We provide metrics to measure the efficacy of ongoing conservation activity. We identify the ‘dark’ spaces in parks and protected areas where information is lacking on wildlife, human activity and threats to conservation and make recommendations for filling the knowledge gaps.

  • Strategic/national level

At the strategic/national level we provide the analytical scrutiny to measure and evaluate effect; to provide the empirical evidence required to support national decision making and influence strategic stakeholders. For example, we compiled evidence of the impact of logging and resultant deforestation on wildlife density in a protected area to enable pressure to be brought on the national government to curtail the granting of logging concessions.

Our leadership team have specialist backgrounds countering complex threats in challenging environments.

We have decades of experience building teams and commanding intelligence-led operations. We are at the forefront of adopting and adapting innovative technologies to counter threats to wildlife and the environment in the world's wild places.
